I picked Lyria up from school just in time. She stood there with hands on her hips, clearly indignant about me being five minutes later than usual.

I took her small hand and we headed back to the house, but my normally bubbly Lyria stayed silent.

“You doing okay?” I asked her over dinner. She stared into her soup without making eye contact. I fought down the fear in my gut. If anyone hurt my girl…

“Lyria,” I said again, and she finally looked up.

“You’re seeing that man again.” She said the words simply, matter-of-factly. Goddess, she was too perceptive for her own good. “The alpha.”

I chewed my lip, trying to figure out how to explain this to her. “Yes,” I said finally. “He’s not so bad, you know.”

“He’s not my daddy. You’re my daddy.” She shoveled more soup into her face and broke my gaze again.

I rubbed the back of my neck. This was gonna be harder than I thought. Things were moving forward with Marlowe, but if Lyria wasn’t happy…

“I’ll always be your daddy, sweetheart.” I reached forward to cover her hand with my own. “I’m not going anywhere, you know that. You’re my little princess, and you always come first. Nothing's gonna change that.”

She looked at me through those wide, shining eyes. “Promise?”

I gave her hand a squeeze. “Promise. Now finish your soup so we can get you cleaned up and ready for bed.”

We passed the rest of the meal in silence, but the tension in the air still hung thick and heavy.

One step forward, two steps back.
